Walter’s grandfather, William, opened
the original store in 1911. Back then,
few would have imagined the little shop
on Belfast’s Shankill Road would
become a genuine Belfast institution.

Walter remembers working there with his mum
and dad after school where he would listen to the
hustle and bustle of the housewives who would
visit the shop.

The popularity of the shop grew as did their food
service business. Soon the company was building
a formidable reputation as suppliers to Northern
Ireland’s leading restaurants and hotels.

Today, Ewing’s smoked salmon is a favourite among
many Michelin starred chefs and this traditional
family run fishmongers is just as passionate about
the quality of the fish they sell.

“A beautiful smoked salmon. Dense, moist with
a soft mellow flavour – the best of the best.”

“Ewings is the oldest fishmonger in Ireland –
and the most respected too. Walter has marvellous
ways of smoking fish that go back to his grandfather
and father. I love working with people who have a
genuine love for what they do.”

We are very privileged at Ewing’s to have a
portrait of Walter painted by no other than local
born and bred star, Oliver Jeffers. We are delighted
to have Oliver’s painting intergrated into all of our
lovely branding. Visit our painting on Oliver’s site,
and have a browse at all of his beautiful work.
